On the field

The clinical component requires a minimum of 2 years of clinical experience under the direct supervision of a Certified Athletic Trainer. Athletic Training Students will gain experience with both men's and women's sports teams, a wide range of athletic exposures, athletic settings, and personnel. Student's will complete two, one-year clinical rotations at 2/10 clinical sites within San Diego County. The ten affiliated clinical sites include:

  • San Diego State University
  • University of California, San Diego
  • University of San Diego
  • Cuyamaca Community College
  • Grossmont Community College
  • San Diego City Community College
  • San Diego Mesa Community College
  • Southwestern Community College
  • Cathedral Catholic High School
  • Rancho Bernardo High School

During the clinical rotation a student may anticipate spending 20 hours/week in the athletic training room or clinical facility. This includes, but is not limited to, practice/game preparations, practice/game coverage, rehabilitation/injury management services, inservices, workshops, surgical observations, and opportunities to assist the physicians in a clinical setting.


The Future Athletic Trainers Society is a student run organization that provides additional resources for athletic training students.
