The San Diego State University Athletic Training Program began with the appointment of Bob Moore, PT, ATC in 1968. The fall semester of 1968 also marked the entry of the SDSU Men’s Athletic Program into the NCAA Division I. There were no organized intercollegiate programs for women at that time, other than club level athletic teams. However, athletic training services were provided for all athletes in need by the SDSU athletic training staff. The first ATS was Jim Hammond in 1968. September 1969 marked the addition of the first female ATS, Connie Spooner. SDSU became one of the first co-ed athletic training departments in the nation. Bob Moore was integral in providing equal opportunity for ALL those with a passion for athletic training. His mentorship, education, and leadership over the years has produced thousands of athletic training professionals. Many of whom have gone on to accomplish great things!
His professional accomplishments include recognition as the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer in 1995. He was inducted into the Far West Athletic Trainers’ Association (FWATA) Hall of Fame in 1997 and the highly acclaimed NATA Hall of Fame in 2003. He is internationally known for his expertise in manual therapy, specifically Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) techniques. His love of learning and passion for passing this along to students has instilled international and national recognition of the Athletic Training Program at SDSU. We continually strive to maintain and carry this legacy forward for high educational standards and equal opportunities for all!
